Egypt’s Power-Cut Scheme to Save Nearly USD 1 Billion Per Year

The Egyptian government estimates that it will save nearly USD 1 billion yearly through its daily power-cut initiative. These savings would be allocated to essential supplies like food and medicine. The government plans to terminate the program as soon as sufficient financial resources are secured, acknowledging the burden it places on citizens.

Started in July 2023 to ease strain on the gas network caused by high temperatures and air conditioner usage, the power cuts were extended in October due to decreased gas imports. Exceptions were made during mid-year exams in January and suspended entirely during Ramadan and Eid Al-Fitr. Additionally, power cuts will be halted in churches nationwide during Easter and Holy Week celebrations.
