Karim El Hayawan & Sabrine El Hossamy Release Award-Winning Short Film

During the Luxor African Film Festival, musician Sabrine El Hossamy teamed up with photographer and architect Karim El Hayawan to participate at the FACTORY, an initiative that supports female filmmakers and creators and gives them a platform to share their vision. There, they created their short film, ‘Mn Wahi Hathout’ (‘From Hathor’s Subconscious’), which won them the Golden Prize for Best Film in Development.

“The inspiration behind the film was women in ancient Egypt and the power of music,” El Hossamy tells #CairoScene. Famed for her drum playing across social media, El Hossamy is more than qualified to comment on music as a cultural force. “Through Hathor, goddess of love and music, we were inspired to create the film as a prelude to another project we are working on. Karim and I always wanted to work together, and he is a brilliant artist so we started developing the film together surrounding this theme.”

The film features El Hossamy playing the drums, as though she were part of a ritual, tapping into an unspoken language that can only be heard through the beat of her instruments. She then walks through Luxor and Sakkara, with the camera following her journey through open palm fields, souks, temples, and rural homes, all while El Hossamy recites an Arabic qaseeda.
