Koni’ichiwa Umm Kalthoum? This Illustrator’s Take on Egyptian Icons is Unlike Anything We’ve Seen

Fat Head Studio’s latest illustration series takes us on a trip down memory lane— to Tokyo. In the midst of the ongoing J-pop and anime craze, Egyptian icons from our past and present are rebirthed a la Nippon in this new creative concept.

Tokyo Reborn is the lovechild of Japanese art and Egyptian cultural iconography. The series features the likes of Umm Kalthoum, Abdel Halim Hafez, Fouad Al Mohandes, Mo Salah, and Ismail Yassin, as well as a few more.

The Cairo-based design studio responsible for this colourful reimagination was founded by Akram William, an illustrator and designer who is no stranger to reworking images of popular iconography into numerous illustration styles, having done so before in stained-glass inspired portraits that gained much attention online. With this new series, though, he’s pretty much outdone himself. What can we say? Omedeto.
