'Look Them in the Eye' Show to Support Palestine at Ubuntu Art Gallery

Egyptian artist Nada Mobarak’s newest exhibit at Ubuntu Art Gallery is best described as a socio-cultural commentary shedding light on a necessary conversation about the oppressed. With the humanitarian crisis currently underway in the Gaza Strip, it could not have been more well-timed. Titled ‘Look Them in the Eye’, Mobarak’s exhibit  invites viewers to stop, look and acknowledge the people around them who have been rendered invisible by their marginalization.

“I’m inspired by people’s ability to carry on despite immense challenges,” Mobarak tells #CairoScene. “And none more so than girls and women, whose futures are riddled with societal barriers and obstacles to overcome.”

Drawing inspiration from Egyptian heritage, each painting is paired with an illustration of an animal that complements it, like bulls, ibexes or wildebeests - animals that were considered gods and symbols of strength thousands of years ago. “In matching the figures with the animals, I imagine what these people once were, the many things they could have become and what they are up against, and pay homage to their ability to endure,” Mobarak says.

The exhibition began on Thursday May 20th and will run until Saturday June 12th, with 20% of all sales donated to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society.
