Tahya Misr Fund to Pump EGP 200 Million Into Local Handicrafts

Egypt’s skillful artisans and traditional handicrafts continue to weave the expansive tapestry that is the country’s intangible heritage. The handicrafts sector has the potential to become a major source of revenue and contribute to the country’s socio-economic development. A decrease in local demand has stoked fears that these ancient crafts may be dwindling out of existence, however, especially with the younger generation’s reluctance to learn the trade. Continuing their mission to preserve and revive this treasured tradition, the Egyptian government has allocated EGP 200 million from the Tahya Misr Fund to develop and stimulate the handicrafts sector.

Despite a number of opportunities popping up in Egypt thanks to the global demand for traditional products, artisans still face various challenges and obstacles that threaten their survival. Today’s artisans suffer from a dearth of equipment, funds and the inability to meet global standards.

From Arabesque textiles and furnishings to decorative appliques and crochet to copper, silver and alabaster, Egypt’s handicrafts are breathing life into age-old techniques that have been passed down for centuries. This step will not only help integrate the informal and official state economy but will also put Egyptian products on the global market.
