Egypt’s Trailblazing Trella Expands Digital Freight Services to UAE

Digital freight marketplace, Trella, has expanded its operations into UAE, marking a major milestone for a trailblazing startup that is considered the leading platform of its kind in the MENAP region.

Having already expanded outside of Egypt and into Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, the move will see the Cairo-based startup gain greater access to the GCC region, especially in facilitating freight movement between Saudi Arabia and UAE.

The expansion comes on the back of a $42 million funding round, consisting of $30 million in new equity and $12 million in debt facilities, an impressive figure that speaks of Trella’s impact on a sector that isn’t counted amongst the most fashionable. The MENAP road freight market is worth an estimated $50 billion, though, and alongside fuelling growth, the investment was channelled into product and tech development, as Trella trucks on in its efforts to ‘reinvent trucking’.

As a platform, Trella brings the freight industry closer together, connecting shippers directly to carriers in a set-up that reaps benefits for both parties. Costs are reduced through improved load utilisation, while truckers gain improved efficiency in the very way freight is moved, subsequently boosting opportunities and earnings. It’s impact goes beyond the perceived boundaries of the industry, however, something that isn’t lost on the Trella team.

“Logistics competency is directly linked to economic growth, meaning our platform’s ability to bring more transparent, reliable and efficient trucking more widely across the GCC is excellent for the region and our own growth,” said Head of Global Expansion at Trella, Peter May. “The MENAP freight market is a significant one, and we are trusted and used by some of the world’s most recognisable brands. Today’s launch in the UAE is just the start of our wider roll-out across more cities and countries in the GCC.”

Trella boasts over 350 shipping partners, including the likes of  Coca-Cola, Maersk, Mondi, Henkel, Orascom and Cemex, as well as over 15,000 carrier partners across an expansive network that will now improve with the move into the UAE.
