Egypt to Start Manufacturing Electric Cars

"Egypt" and "electric cars" aren't two words you often hear together, but thanks to a deal between local company Nasr Automotive and China's Dongfeng Motor Corporation, we may be swapping in that exhaust pipe dream for a clean, electrical outlet for our fantasies. Starting in 2022, Nasr Automotive's electric vehicle, the Nasr E70, is expected to hit the Egyptian market, which not only means we finally have a native option for those of us who want to go green, but it opens up a gateway for exports in Africa and neighbouring countries.

The Nasr E70 car will be able to travel 400km per charge at a maximum speed of 145 km per hour, and goes from 0 to 100km speed in 10.8 seconds. The battery itself charges to 80% in only 30 minutes, which - as far as car batteries go - is better than we expected. A new factory will start producing up to 50,000 cars annually in 2021.

Dongfeng is one of the largest motor companies in China, with a production volume of 3.6 million cars annually. As per their collaboration with Egypt, we will be able to produce 25,000 electric passenger cars annually, before it slowly grows that number over the coming years.
