600 Year-Old Ornament from Historic Mosque in Old Cairo Recovered Five Years After Being Stolen

Stolen in 2014, a copper ornament that had once decorated the main door of the historic Al-Kady Abdel-Baset Mosque in Old Cairo has been recovered and restored by Egypt’s Ministry of Antiquities. The suspect was found in possession of several other ornaments stolen from several mosques in the area.

The decorative item had been taken from the outer door of the mosque, which was built in 1420 AD, and the police were able to identify the burglar after reviewing the area’s surveillance camera footage, head of the Ministry’s Islamic, Coptic and Jewish Antiquities Department, Gamal Mustafa, explained to Ahram Online.

Among the other items that the perpetrator was caught with were a wooden decorative motif from the Gany Bek Mosque, and a handwritten relief from the Ahmed Al-Mehmendar Mosque in Al-Darb Al-Ahmar.
