Damietta was included among ten cities from around the world were selected for the award by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) at the recommendation of an independent jury of experts.

Damietta Awarded UNESCO Learning City Award 2021

The city of Damietta has been awarded the UNESCO Learning City Award 2021 for its achievements in lifelong learning and sustainable development. Ten cities from around the world were selected for the award by the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning (UIL) at the recommendation of an independent jury of experts.

Damietta’s orientation towards lifelong learning has helped the city take more tangible steps towards sustainable development, developing the basic life skills of adults and improving the health of more than 330,000 people. The city also has proved to be a proponent of women’s rights, implementing projects to help women pursue entrepreneurship opportunities by developing their skills and training them in a number of crafts.

The 2021 UNESCO Learning City Awardees were recognized for their ability to empower their citizens to embrace and adapt to change, paving the way for a more sustainable future. The awarded cities are Damietta (Egypt), Al Wakra (Qatar), Belfast (UK and Northern Ireland), Clermont-Ferrand (France), Dublin (Ireland), Huejotzingo, (Mexico), Jubail Industrial City (Saudi Arabia), Osan (Republic of Korea), Shanghai (People’s Republic of China), and Wyndham (Australia).
