Egypt Allocates Billions to Develop Sinai

Egypt has revealed plans to encourage Egyptians to move to and settle in the Sinai Peninsula, alongside a number of development projects underway in the area.

Currently, over 560,000 people live in Sinai, which is 61,000 square kilometres large. It is hoped that these projects will provide job opportunities and attract residents to live across Sinai’s two governorates. The total costs of these projects add up to EGP 486 billion.

Many of these projects are aimed at improving North Sinai’s infrastructure, which will happen over two phases. The first phase, at a cost of EGP 6 billion, will build on the irrigation and drainage systems of several North Sinai cities, and the establishment of several small towns. The second phase, which will cost EGP 17 billion, will see the restoration of Alfarma and other areas around the governorate.

North Sinai will also see the establishment of eight villages for fishermen, and the development of Lake Bardawil, at a cost of EGP 120 million.

35 roads have been completed with another 29 under planning and construction, creating a total length of 3,440km to facilitate movement within the governorate. Other projects include a number of bridges, tunnels and residency projects, as well as schools, universities, research centres and hospitals.
