Egypt’s Minister of Environment H.E. Dr. Yasmine Fouad and Morocco's Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development H.E. Dr. Leila Benali signed a draft Memorandum of Understanding on the sidelines of COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh. The partnership is set to bring both North African countries' interests together in the fields of environmental protection and sustainable development with a focus on the ‘Waste 50 Initiative’.

The ‘Waste 50 Initiative’ emphasises the need for urgent climate action and results by the year 2050, through an institutional and legislative framework for the environment and sustainable development, environmental impact assessment of projects, adaptation and mitigation of climate changes, development of renewable energies, integrated management of coastal areas and combating marine pollution, management of transboundary hazardous and solid wastes, management of nature reserves, conservation of biodiversity and rehabilitation of ecosystems.

The partnership is part of Egypt’s vision of joint cooperation between Arab countries, according to the Minister of Environment, H.E. Dr. Yasmine Fouad.
