Egypt & UNWomen Launch Initiative to Empower African Women at COP27

The African Women’s Climate Adaptive Priorities (CAP) initiative was launched at COP27 in partnership with UN Women to address systematic inequalities and enable women’s engagement in the transition to a climate-safe future.

The Global South suffers disproportionately between bearing the brunt of climate change impact and battling the remnants of colonialist structures. However, it is African women who not only carry the burden of alleviating the pressure of all of these issues in their communities, but are the most disproportionately affected by the ongoing climate crisis.

During a special session at #COP27’s #BlueZone, preceding the launch of CAP, a discussion was led by Egypt’s Minister of Environment H.E. Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Dr. Maya Morsy, President of the Egyptian National Council for Women, Dr. Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women, and Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin, the UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for Egypt and the Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund.

“Women remain the main engine in tackling the front lines of climate change,” said Minister of Environment H.E. Dr. Yasmine Fouad, while she delivered a speech on behalf of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

The initiative centres gender-sensitive climate responses throughout Africa by tackling capacity building, access to climate finance, STEM education and skills. It will also address women’s participation in policy planning and knowledge sharing, as well as the implementation of adaptive agriculture, water management, and renewable energy.

CAP seeks to elevate the vital voices of women as those who safeguard our communities and involve them directly and regimentally in the policymaking process.
