Grand Egyptian Museum Forms Board of Directors

As the long-awaited Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) finally nears completion, Prime Minister Dr. Mostafa Madbouly announced that the museum's Board of Directors is now being organized. Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled Al-Anani will be taking the lead as the head of the board.

The board will consist of executive heads at the GEM, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, the Egyptian Tourism Promotion Board, and the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI), the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, and a number of representatives from smaller governmental institutions, academics, and experts. The term of the board members will be renewed every two years, and the board will be meeting at least once a month as well as on urgent matters that come up.

The museum was meant to be inaugurated last June, but had to be postponed after the rise of the Coronavirus. Now it seems that they’re picking up the pace with 96.5% of the museum being completed and the transfer of 55,000 artefacts into its halls. Currently, there are talks of a cable-car being built to transport tourists from the GEM hotel area to the bottom of the Giza Plateau, but no foundation has been laid down as of yet.
