Grand Imam of al-Azhar Picks Institution's First-Ever Female Advisor

The Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Ahmed el-Tayeb, has appointed Nahla El Saidi, the Dean of the Al-Azhar College of Islamic Sciences for International Students, as his advisor for expatriate affairs, making her the first female advisor to the Grand Imam in the institution’s history.

El-Tayeb’s decision comes within Egypt’s ongoing discourse regarding the rights of women in the workplace and in society at large. Earlier this March, the Egyptian government allowed female judges to join the State Council, setting a precedent by swearing in 98 female judges.
