Heavy Vehicle Weight Limit Rule Postponed in UAE

The Emirati Cabinet has officially postponed the implementation of a new resolution regulating the weights and dimensions of heavy vehicles operating within the country. This decision comes amidst concerns about potential economic impacts and a need for further study.

The original implementation date, set for Q1 2024, has been delayed indefinitely due to concerns over potentially unjustified price increases for goods and commodities due to stricter weight limitations. The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure will conduct an extensive study on the implications of the resolution, and the Ministry of Economy will collaborate with economic entities to prevent unreasonable price hikes.

As for earlier regulations, a federal rule governing the weights and dimensions of heavy vehicles was passed by the Cabinet in September 2023. The law forbade the use of heavy vehicles with a maximum combined weight exceeding 65 tonnes on public roads, with violations incurred fines up to Dh15,000.

The results of the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure's study and the Ministry of Economy's price monitoring efforts will be crucial in determining the future of the weight limit regulation.
