Ministry of Environment Preserves Over 2,000 African Houbara Birds

The Ministry of Environment organised the rescue and release of over 2,000 African Houbara birds in the Matrouh governorate, as part of a cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Environment and the International Fund for Houbara Conservation in the United Arab Emirates. The agreement hopes to help restore and preserve the African Houbara and other major species in Egypt through research and conservation efforts.

This release marks a significant milestone in Egyptian-Emirati cooperation in the protection of biological diversity.

DNA and molecular biology assessments were performed, and the results were compared with reference samples kept in genetic libraries to ensure that they are of the same local breed that exists or used to exist in Egypt. These checks were made in accordance with relevant international agreements for biological diversity and preservation.

Part of this initiative is the establishment of an area to conserve the African Houbara and other major species in the Matrouh governorate, and areas that can be designated for sustainable hunting. The project's work will be continued over the next ten years.
