New Sphinx International Airport Received First International Flight This Week

Cairo’s new Sphinx International Airport (SPX) received its first charter flight on Monday, according to a statement issued by the Civil Aviation ministry. The flight came from Jordan and marked the airport's first international flight, carrying 108 passengers in total.

The airport was inaugurated in 2019 and is part of an on-going effort to increase tourism in the coming years. In January of 2019, the airport started trial operations of domestic flights to Sharm El Sheikh but had not yet commenced international flights.

The airport is located near the Cairo-Alexandria road and caters to the areas of Giza, Al Haram, 6th of October, Faiyum and Beni Suef, making it easier for residents on the West side of the capital to travel.

Considering that the airport is located near the Great Pyramids of Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum, the new airport is expected to encourage visitors for one-day tours to explore the biggest attractions in Cairo.
