Street in Abu Dhabi Named After Celebrated Egyptian City Planner

The United Arab Emirates has renamed a street in Abu Dhabi after Egyptian architect Abdul Rahman Makhlouf, in honour of his contribution to the emirate’s urban planning. Formerly known as ‘Al Soog’, the street has had its name changed to Abdul Rahman Makhlouf Street to memorialise the legendary architect shortly following his passing at the age of 98.

The late engineer’s work with the UAE began in 1976, when Makhlouf founded the Arab Office for Planning and Architecture, and created the bulk of his projects for the Arab emirate’s urban development. In 1983, he was appointed as an engineering lecturer at the United Arab Emirates University.

After a lifetime of work, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan awarded Makhlouf the Abu Dhabi Prize in 2010. A year later, he was honoured by the cultural attaché of the Egyptian Embassy in Abu Dhabi.
