Submarine Telecommunications Cable to Link Egypt & Greece

Telecom Egypt and GRID Telecom, a division of the Greek Independent Electricity Transmission Operator (IPTO) have signed an agreement for joint cooperation to link Egypt and Greece through the construction of a new submarine cable.

In addition to creating a new access point for Europe throughout the Mediterranean basin, which is essential for international telecommunication services, the new agreement with Grid Telecom will expand the flexibility and reach of Telecom Egypt's worldwide infrastructure, enabling the creation of an eastern gateway to Europe via Greece.

The new cable helps Egypt position itself as a global hub for data and communications traffic between East and West since it is the shortest way to travel by land and sea from the Mediterranean region to the Balkans, and other locations like Genoa and Marseille.

Egypt and Greece signed a memorandum of understanding on February 6th, 2022, to help enable greater communication connections between the two nations given their technological and geographical advantages.
