AlRahmany Is the Old Cairo Shop Serving Sobia for Over a Century

This holy month, we’re bringing back our ‘A Story from Every Corner’ series but with a little Ramadan twist, starting with how AlRahmany has been making everyone’s favourite drink for over a century.

A creamy classic, a sweet staple, a shot of liquid lucidity in the often overwhelming revelry of Ramadan. Yes, it is officially Sobia Season in Egypt, as fasters submit to the spell of a seemingly simple concoction of coconut milk and rice.



As with so much of Egypt’s culinary heritage, there’s a history behind Sobia, a history that can be traced back to Sobia ElRahmany, a veritable landmark in Al Sayeda Zeinab that has been serving their secret Sobia recipe to the masses since 1920.
