These Dresses are Making a Cute Sixties Comeback with Kedi of Kairo

It’s time for a confession. Like many Egyptians, we’ve grown up with a crush on Souad Hosni, and Shadia, and basically every Golden Age star. With their bonbon 60s aesthetic, we too want to go on a date in Groppi wearing a dolly dress. But alas, no such luck. Instead we go for sushi in New Cairo or for coffee at a Zamalek corner store. Boring. Who’s going to make our polka-dot dreams come true? Drawing on the same feminine aesthetic and adorable co-ords of the Peacock Revolution, local fashion brand Kedi of Kairo is giving us a taste of the good old days in a way that fits 2021 like a glove.

“I want women to start wearing skirts and dresses again like back in the day,” designer and founder Maha Noureldin tells #CairoScene. “It’s been making a bit of a comeback over the last couple of years, but it’s still not the same as how Egyptian women used to dress. It’s not just about having women go back to dressing femininely. I wanted to do something cheerful, full of life, that uplifts women in this dark era of the pandemic.”

Having lived for years in the fashion capital of the world, Paris, Noureldin often found herself strolling up and down the Champs Elysees galavanting at the shop windows. On her 40th birthday, she stepped away from the F&B industry where she had worked for most of her life, and finally launched her pret-a-porter label. Named after the Turkish word for cats, Kedi for Kairo crafts designs that embody that feline, feminine nature that Noureldin hopes to elevate: sexy, hard to get, and endearingly playful.
