Often overlooked in modern times, metallics were heavily circulated as a staple texture from the mid-90s through to the Y2K era, dropping the miniskirt/babydoll girl aesthetic in favour of sheer grunge sensation. Since supermodel Lina Evangelista strutted out in a metallic A-line mini and vest on a New York runway in 1994, pop stars and models alike glistened in metallic platform pumps, gloves, and vests. While distinctly Western, and iconic for its time, Egyptian label Zuri is bringing metallics back with local flair.

Meaning ‘beautiful’ in Swahili, Zuri started as a rekindling between African aesthetics and contemporary trends. “When I first started I was inspired by earthy materials and the natural elements that surround us,” Mai Reda, Founder of Zuri, tells SceneStyled. “I really liked to experiment with newer raw materials and combine them with a contrasting touch of leather and gold embellishments.”

The collection’s geometric designs serve as the everyday staple piece one needs to soothe a demure - perhaps even a last-minute - outfit. But Zuri’s appeal lies not just in how sweet they look, but in how sweet they feel - particularly when it comes to sustainability.

“I focus on using recycled or raw materials,” Zuri says. “They have a lighter impact on the environment.”

Zuri’s eco-friendly philosophy has not only catapulted them to success subsequent to their first drop, but it continues to shape and align with their creative direction. which ultimately enables them to keep up with the times, in their own, lighthearted way.
