Ascent to Hold 'Rock Warriors' Climbing Competition in Sheikh Zayed

Ascent, Egypt’s first indoor climbing facility, is looking to elevate this niche sport to a professional level with its first 2021 Annual ‘Rock Warriors’ Competition on December 10th.

“We strive to take the lead towards spreading sport climbing in different parts of Egypt,” co-founder Omar Safar tells CairoScene. “We seek to promote beginner and intermediate climbers to join our community and develop their climbing skills using our facility.”

Taking place at their Sheikh Zayed location in Eden Mall, the competition is meant to draw in climbers of all levels, with different categories for beginners, intermediate and advanced athletes. All competitions will abide by Olympic climbing rules.

“Climbing is essentially like solving a puzzle,” co-founder Youssef Shoukry says. “It requires focus and strategy to successfully climb a unique route each time. You must work your way up one strategic move at a time.”

Globally, sport climbing has seen spectacular growth during the last two decades and Ascent has carried this momentum to Egypt, introducing the activity as a professional sport and raising awareness of its physical benefits through workshops and trips.
