Cairo International Book Fair Bans Unvaccinated Visitors

The annual Cairo International Book Fair is back for its 53rd edition with its largest selection of books yet, with titles from more than 1,000 publishers and agencies from across the globe. Taking public health and safety into consideration, the fair is barring anyone who is not vaccinated against COVID-19 from entering the grounds.

The slogan for this year’s book fair is ‘Egypt’s Identity – Culture & Question of the Future’, and is made to stoke a passion for Egypt’s rich heritage amongst the next generation. Showcasing Egypt’s achievements in technology and artificial intelligence, the fair will honour the late novelist Yahya Haqqi in hologram form, which audiences can interact with during a presentation. Children will also be treated to a virtual experience through the books of one of the region’s greatest children’s literature writers, Abdel Tawab Youssef, using VR glasses.

Running in tandem with the book fair, the Ministry of Culture will launch a digital library with the General Book Authority.

The fair will also offer a new award for Best Arab Publisher, while increasing the prize for each cultural award from EGP 10,000 to EGP 40,000.

Tickets to the fair costs EGP 5 a piece, and are available online to all vaccinated visitors at www.cairobookfair.gebo.gov.eg
