New Projects Launched to Protect Egyptians from Flooding

With predictions that the Nile will experience higher flooding this year based on global patterns of increased rainfall, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation is implementing proactive measures in the event of any increase in the river’s water level.

A string of projects are being carried out from Upper Egypt to Matrouh to protect people and infrastructures from any potential damage caused by the overflowing of the Nile, particularly with flooding season beginning soon.

These include the construction of dams, underground reservoirs, barriers, artificial lakes, detention basins and industrial canals, which are also being implemented in the governorates of North Sinai, South Sinai, and the Red Sea. Besides protecting people, roads and powerlines, these projects are designed to collect rainfall to ensure the availability of water for many desert and rural areas.
