Spreading Culture with Literacy with First Haya Karima Library in Qena

As part of the 'Haya Karima' initiative to enrich the lives of Egypt's most vulnerable rural communities, the Ministry of Culture has opened a library in Al-Marasha, a village in the Qena governorate. As the first 'Haya Karima' library of its kind to be built, the library looks to serve readers of all ages from children to the elderly through its selection of culturally enriching books, to its green outdoor spaces where cultural events and workshops can be held.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Culture announced that it would set up 3,000 book distribution booths in villages through the Haya Karima initiatives, starting with 330 booths with material for Egyptians of many different backgrounds and reading proficiency levels.

Along with their medical outreach programmes and their efforts to upgrade the educational system, Haya Karima has been expanding rural Egyptians' access to information through the implementation of a fibre optic network and a thousand cell towers across Upper Egypt.
