Everything You Need to Know About Egypt’s First Ever Fashion Week

In a utopian fashion universe, one would wake up with a wrist covered with diamond and gold armour and a closet of silk ponchos and hand embroidered floor length gowns. Each piece would tell its own story and each stitch would serve as a reminder of the people and places who’ve inspired it. Because what truly matters, at the end of every shopping spree and online scavenging session, is the realisation the pieces you’ve obtained will serve as life-long memorabilia.

Bearing that notion in mind, The Egyptian Fashion and Design Council is hosting the first edition of Egypt Fashion Week from May 12th to May 17th. Much like its global counterparts this homegrown edition unites some of the region’s biggest designers, fashion editors, creatives, art directors and stylists.

Exhibitions by The Saudi Fashion Commission, Creative Space Beirut, FAD Dubai, Jordan Fashion Week, Lagos Fashion Week, GTEX and Mod'Art are set to enliven The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir as a slew of panel discussions on ‘The Importance of Formal Education’, ‘How to Talk Retail’, ‘Sustainable Fashion in Egypt Now & Tomorrow’, ‘Connecting the Continent Through Fashion’ and ‘Keeping Local Craftsmanship Alive’ set the tone for the week ahead.

Prominent industry figures including the likes of EFDC’s Susan Sabet, Mall of Arabia’s Paul Antaki, Maison 69’s Amir Fayo, Azza Fahmy’s Amina Ghali, Messika Jewellery’s Valerie Messika, and WWD’s Rita Udapayah will guide the conversations, impart their wisdom on the region’s up and coming designers and watch as Egypt enters a new fashion forward era.
