An Early Look at South Sinai's Great Transfiguration
The Egyptian government is currently implementing the Great Transfiguration, a vast renovation that will transform St Catherine into a major tourist destination to showcase its spiritual heritage.
The city of St Catherine, with its monastery and its sacred mountains, has always been an important destination for people of all Abrahamic faiths. In order to honour its spiritual legacy, as well as showcase its natural wonders, the Egyptian government is currently implementing the Great Transfiguration, a vast renovation that will transform the area into a major tourist destination.
The Great Transfiguration includes he development of the 'Darb Musa' pathway, simulating the route that Moses took to reach the nearby mountains, where it is believed he saw God speak to him through a burning bush.
The project also includes the establishment of a hotel in the mountains, an ecolodge, housing units, the Bedouin area in the city, and the creation of the 'Peace Square' to host all manners of celebrations. The first phase of the project is scheduled for inauguration this April.
