Saudi’s Abha International Airport Will Undergo Major Transformation

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman announced the launch of a 'master plan' for the transformation of the Kingdom's Abha International Airport. The project aims to create a new architectural landmark that reflects the heritage of the Asir region while establishing a consistent identity.

The expansion of the airport will see the terminal area increase sixfold, from the current 10,500 square metres to an impressive 65,000 square metres. This expansion will include the construction of passenger boarding bridges, self-service facilities to streamline travel procedures, and high-capacity parking facilities.

The design of the new airport will reflect the architectural identity of the Asir region to showcase Saudi culture. The upgraded airport will have a capacity to accommodate over 13 million passengers annually, nearly nine times its current capacity of 1.5 million. Moreover, the number of flights is expected to triple, reaching over 90,000 flights per year.

With 20 gates and 41 check-in counters, including seven new self-service check-ins, the new Abha airport will significantly enhance air connectivity. The 2030 Vision goal is to increase air connectivity to 250 destinations and transport 330 million passengers, attracting more tourists to the region.
