Egyptian Becomes Youngest Ever Squash Champion in New York

Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall was on fire last Thursday as two of squash’s youngest and most promising women went head-to-head for the tournament final: Egyptian-American Harvard laureate Amanda Sobhy lost to 20-year-old Alexandrian Nour ElSherbiny, who broke the record for the youngest player ever to win the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions. “It’s an unbelievable feeling... I can’t express it, words can’t describe how I’m feeling right now. This one is really special and something I’ll never forget. I’m really happy,” said ElSherbiny.

Sobhy, the highest-ranking American player according to the Professional Squash Association, was quite the good sport and had nothing but praise for her formidable opponent. “Nour was at the top of her game tonight; she was able to keep her position in front for most of the match and made almost no errors,” she said of the newly-crowned champion.

To keep it in the family, world’s top squash player Muhammad ElShorbagy took home the male trophy for the second year in a row after defeating Nick Matthew. “It’s a great start to the year for me… I’m glad I beat Matthew for the second consecutive time in the final,” ElShorbagy said.
