Helm's First Biannual Conference Brings Disabilities To the Public Agenda

The entrepreneurial changemakers behind Helm continue to transform Cairo’s social landscape, as they organised their first biannual conference on accessibility, Cairo 2016: A City For All, a landmark event towards the modernisation of the urban space to promote inclusion and accessibility for people with disabilities.

Founders Amena el-Saie and Ramez Maher, who were selected last year as some of CairoScene’s real influencers of 2015, and who have recently won the Startupper of the Year award, put together this globally-pioneering event, which finally brought disabilities to the national public agenda, developing an action plan that enhances their inclusion.

The conference kicked off on Tuesday, featuring renowned local and international experts seeking to develop feasible solutions to be implemented by government officials, policy-makers, companies, infrastructure developers, and educators. Panelists included Walt Disney Park’s World Wide Accessibility Manager, Jay Cardinali, and John Kemp, President of the Viscardi Center in the United States.

Among the conference's cornerstone achievements, the non-profit organisation signed a protocol with the Governor of Giza, Mohamed Kamal ElDaly, to make touristic areas accessible for persons with disabilities.
