Injaz Launches the 5,000 Pencil Case Crowdfunding Campaign

Egyptian non-profit, Injaz, has launched their first Crowdfunding effort, entitled 5,000 Pencil Case Campaign. The fundraiser aims at collecting school supplies for 5,000 students in need across Cairo, Giza, and Minya, Upper Egypt, and is collecting donations online through Egypt’s first gamified crowdfunding platform, Tennra.

“This campaign is the biggest to launch yet on Tennra, which is a 2015 Injaz Egypt-incubated startup,” says Perihan El Hefny, Communications and Research Specialist at INJAZ Egypt. For each $10 donation, three students will be gifted a pencil case. “The campaign will be live for 50 days and aims to raise $14,000, engaging INJAZ Egypt’s community of supporters, community partners, and alumni,” she adds.

The pencil case will include all the necessary school supplies for preparatory and secondary grade students, who will then personally write a thank you note to each of the supporters. “We’re aiming to reach out to 35 schools, covering 18 districts in Cairo, eight in Giza, and six in Minya,” El Hefny explains.

Working in Egypt for over 10 years to support literacy and entrepreneurship across schools and universities, Injaz supports 100,000 young entrepreneurs each year, empowering and preparing them to become the next generation’s leaders. Its founder, Dina El Mofty, was listed as one of Egypt’s 11 female entrepreneurs breaking the mould, having started in her early twenties, when bureaucracy and the industry’s obstacles often posed massive challenges to tackle.

The non-profit works with students and young Egyptians graduates between 12 and 27 years old. “We start with preparatory students implementing introductory programs on entrepreneurship, work readiness, and financial literacy, to help them develop their skills and understand how the marketplace functions with the help of volunteers from private companies,” explains El Hefny. The pencil cases collected through the campaign will be distributed among preparatory and secondary students after the implementation of Injaz Egypt’s programs.
