Moroccan Show Angers the World After Airing Makeup Tutorial for Hiding Domestic Abuse

Moroccan television channel 2M is under fire after broadcasting “tutorial instructions for females to hide bruises of domestic violence” on its morning show Sabahiyat (Mornings) last Wednesday, resulting in an apology on Monday.

The daily women’s show aired last Wednesday and offered its viewers a tutorial "to show you the makeup you can use to cover the bruises on your face," as a way of marking the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women.

The broadcast was immediately met with a wave of criticism as Moroccan women created a petition on change.org calling for all Moroccans to denounce the “standardisation of violence against women.”

The online segment was removed, but a petition signed by nearly 2,000 people was sent to Morocco's High Authority for Audiovisual Communications, which called a meeting Monday. After discussing the issue, the authority issued a formal apology stating "Our concern is one: to defend women's rights. In the name of the Sabahiyat team at 2M, we present our apologies and sincere regret over the beauty segment aired on Wednesday, which was an error in judgment." The programme's statement went on to say, "We request your understanding and commit to being more vigilant and precise in each of our programs."

Despite the apology, news of the broadcast has spread globally, resulting international condemnation over the serious “error in judgment.”
