Le Sud: A Fresh Take On All You Can Eat Sushi

It goes without saying that Egyptians love sushi, all the more if there’s some kind of all you can eat situation going on. With the huge mishmash of different restaurants and brands attempting to stake their claim for the crown of best all-you-can-eat sushi (some rather poorly), a new competitor has entered the fray; Le Sud, at the Sofitel El Gezirah is now offering an all-you-can-eat sushi buffet every Sunday, and we were invited to check it out.

Once you enter Le Sud, you are immediately struck by the decor of the place. It’s all very tasteful and simple, with indoor and outdoor seating options available. We sat down and ordered our drinks, before we were told that the buffet was open and to help ourselves. You don’t have to tell us twice. On grabbing our plates, we were immediately spoiled for choice. Rolls upon rolls and a selection of sashimi were all delicately arranged around the center surface of the buffet area, with a selection of desserts and hot dishes (such as Thai curries for the less sushi inclined of you) around the outside.

With our sushi selections piled high alongside ginger, wasabi and soy sauce, we carried our precarious plates back to our tables, and proceeded to tuck in. Contrary to our previous experience with sushi buffets, everything on the dish tasted incredibly fresh. The salmon sashimi in particular tasted like it had been caught that morning. The wide selection of maki was delicious, with each one having its own unique twist, be it some kind of sauce or vegetable in the center of the roll. The use of tuna was also inspired, with no two tuna rolls being alike. Some were given a spicy kick, some had a mildly sweet aspect to them, and some defied explanation, but all were delicious.

After gorging ourselves on at least two of every piece, we decided to power through and check out the dessert options. The small cheesecake pieces were soft, crumbly, and delicious, and the chocolate mousse was delightfully light, with no lack of flavour.

Sushi is an over-saturated market in this nation’s capital, and there have been more than a few places that attempt to cash in on the craze with poor results. Le Sud breaks the mould of the all-you-can-eat format by providing freshness and quality in equal parts. Sushi restaurants are officially on notice; Le Sud is here to stay.
