Tombs From Egypt's New Kingdom Era Discovered in Minya

The Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has announced a discovery in the Al-Ghoreifa area of the Minya governorate.

An Egyptian archaeological mission, which had been working in the area since 2017, uncovered a cemetery for senior officials and priests dating back to the New Kingdom era, which lasted from 1539 BC to 1075 BC. The cemetery also included a number of amulets, ornaments and stone coffins from the Late Period, which ran from 664 BC to 332 BC, indicating that the cemetery may have been reused during this time.The cemetery held two wooden coffins inscribed with women's names, as well as a papyrus containing a version of the Book of the Dead. The Book of the Dead was found in good condition at 13 to 15 metres long with its colours preserved, and will be displayed at the Grand Egyptian Museum.

The archaeological site at Al-Ghoreifa was established in 1925, and has since yielded the discovery of 35 tombs, 90 coffins and 10,000 statues.
